I inherited a house like that. The divider in the nest box should press against the roof and floor of the nest and stop the floor being pushed up as long as there is a secure fastener on the lid, so dont panic if you havent done the floor yet, just padlock the lid. I use wood based horse bedding with a dusting of diatoms for nests after a MAJOR redmite problem, I think caused by dodgy straw. (I think I also brought a mouse in with the bale too, but thats a different story!) If its any help I buy layers mash corn and pellets. My girls get layers mash with warm water in the mornings, a handful of corn when I can afford it at some point in the course of the day when they are being quiet and un psychochicken like, and pellets and greens (cabbage leaves, dandelions etc) ad lib. Mixed grit seems to go untouched for ages then you look and its nearly all gone. Apart from my ancient warren who lays the odd squashy egg my girls lay well, and their eggs are a devil to crack into the frying pan x
