      Hi Angela,

yes, as soon as it's getting colder chickens think it's the perfect time to change into winter clothes ;-)
No, seriously, (at least) two things cause a bird to moult, a sudden drop in outside temperatures and also a sudden drop in protein content of food. Both happens in autumn, when there will be fewer insects and other food rich in protein.

Also, sudden stress can cause them to get into a partial moult so they will lose the feathers of their neck.

Be prepared not to get any eggs from them until days will get longer again!

I've got a cockeral who is running round in just his knickers Looks sooo funny but wont let me get a photo.
This time of year every corner is full of feathers. I just make sure they get extra treats to boost them (like some warm porridge for breakfast and mealworms and a bit of poultry spice) and stick a bit of extra bedding down. But all in all they usualy do ok.
