  • Introducing 'Grace'

Well after all the quips and fun we had over Roxy's gender, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to this little one's gender? She's a 4 1/2 weeks old Amrock. I was very certain to start with as she was a very dark chick with a very definite head spot, but now look at her!
She was named after Grace Jones as when she hatched she was big and nosiy and bold!

Please ignore the pics of my old dog (both with his slippers on and without - they attached themselves to the other pics).

Hmm...well as you know I'm utter rubbish at sexing my chicks - even up to crowing point in some cases!!!!

BUT- looking at bone width of the legs, I'd be thinking it's a male???

( bound to be female now! )

Sorry! Boy for me too - but Amrocks are big boned birds, perhaps waiting a few more weeks will change things...

I would say boy too. Sorry JM!

I have found that bold chicks are nearly always male. They are generally more inquisitive, easier to tame etc etc. Females are generally more shy and nervous.

Sorry Jess me too say boy.
Barred pure breeds males usualy show a headspot at hatching. And going from my stripey wyandottes and what I was told about barred plymouth rocks, the boys have slightly lighter stripes and a paler appearence cos the stripes are a little wider. Girls have narrow stripes and are very dark.
Hard to tell if you've only got one though.

Oh boogle boo! I was so sure it was a girl - a much darker chick than the others hatched earlier in the year, and much bigger dark bars when she was a teeny. But just look at the size of her/his legs! Another chicken dinner then. I haven't managed to hatch one girl Amrock yet, and this was the first 'home' chick!
                    Thanks for all comments!
