  • Fireworks and Chooks

Advice please ladies as the morons with money spend it on cheap and loud fireworks. I have popped out to the chooks more times tonight than is good for my sanity or their's. What do you all do with your hens when this bang fizz pop is going off? Am thinking of throwing a blanket on the coop but I don't want to inhibit air flow.

I leave them to it - I suspect they will be sleeping through it, mine dont seem to bother. You may upset them more by popping your head in.

    They will be fine x

Right OK. Am not opening up coop - just listening to the walls. I feel like murdering these people.
      Thanks Polo

Don't worry about them. We held a private fireworks party both last year and this in the field right next to the chooks and none have shown signs of being traumatised by it.

Just leave them VVG, you're probably worrying much more than they are. After all, they seem to cope with thunder storms without a problem

            It's my henopause - I can't help it.
Must learn to chill where chooks are concerned.

Today we've lined the hen shed with straw bales, this is helping with noise and draft reduction. We've had surprisingly few fireworks here - it usually sounds like WW3 - for which I'm grateful. We've just creocoted so hopefully we won't get many mites living in the straw over the winter. The girls are dusted every fortnight and dust themselves with diatom mixed with compost whenever they like.

The cats have been worse than the chooks. Most of them aren't that bothered but four of them are near hysterical. We make sure they are all in by teatime, although they generally do that anyway as the queue starts at the feeding station about 4pm.

I was the same last year, VVG. Mine were fine, weren't put off laying or anything so have left them out last night, and will do tonight.

Airflow over bangs? Hmmm! Have you got timber? Can you wrap the bottom as it is eaves airflow you need? I am not an expert. I thought of draping mine last night but we have had a move from timber to plastic, do am hoping twin wall shell helps me or the hens tonight. Be glad when this lot is over.
