  • I think they killed a robin

    My girls that is.

I left them in their run one day last week because the oil was being delivered, and when I went to let them out later there was the ratehrsad looking corpse of a robin in the run - partically devoured too.

Could they have done that? I've seen them massacre frogs - and chase off blackbirds, but I find it hard to believe the rotters massacred a robin.

The robin was probably a victim of a fierce robin fight before he got in with the chooks - they are vicious when they are defending a territory. It all starts with a very loud sing-off and ends in a fight to the death if they need to.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

My lot totally ignor robins and other small birds that fly into the enclosed run when the door is open. They will usually chase the blackbird if he's in their outer run but not harm him. However I saved a pigeon that got stuck in their run (couldn't find the open door) and he was practically bald when I got to him and my neighbour saved a magpie which the girls tried to savage. I'm not sure I would have tried to save the magpie but I was out.

It's protein - they will take what they can get. All natural and normal. Robin was probably a victim of some other kerfuffle as Jeanied says and hens took advantage.

I feel a bit better - I like Robins - but perhaps it was already poorly. I have to say, it didn't look it though, the uneaten bit was perfect looking.

If you could see them squabble over a frog - eugh.
