I'm amazed - I was right first time. Poor old spotty dogs with Friars Balsam on their split ends. How did it work - just by stopping them coughing?

Newskin...never thought of that. We've got some too. I'll catch Luna up tomorrow clean it up and cover it in that. I had thought of candle wax - too brittle - or superglue as I've mended my own nails with that, but it contains a minute amount of cyanide...not good.

            thanks Binners, great suggestion!

Sorry Jules, but I just have to ask. Does Luna lay according to the moon?

I remembered the sting last night, and wondered whether it was a fair thing to do - although it must sting like heck anyway. We cleaned it out, purple sprayed and then, whilst the purple spray was still damp, we dipped it in potassium permanganate crystals. The DD has these in her BoP first aid kit.

VC, she's called Luna because she's white (a Light Sussex) and a bit of a headcase. She seems ok this morning, but DD will catch her up and check her over in a while. We went to put them in to bed last night and all of Luna's white feathers were covered in blood - she'd tried to scratch using the broken claw - so as an anti-pecking precaution we covered all of the spots of blood in purple spray. Effectively we now have a Purple Sussex!
