what a comforting sight I have just seen!

Hi All, As you know i have been worried about my rescue hen that is moulting in these minus temperatures. For the past couple of nights when i have gone to lock them up the moulting black rock hen jenny has been trying to sidle up to miranda my maran cuivree for body heat i think.

Well, i have just gone to lock them away tonight and have seen miranda with her wing outstretched and wrapped around jenny the rescue hen who is making what i think sounds like contented noises because she is probably getting warmer. What a nice sight for me to see it has made my day!

How sweet. She should be nice and snug now. Some of my bantams do this, the smaller ones wriggle under the wings of the larger ones. I went down to dust my bantam horde one night this week and found one of the cocks "brooding" two hens, one under each wing!

When raising chicks- the bantam chicks are often adopted by a buff orpington female- its how I know which are boys and girls at 5 weeks or so- the buff orp allows pekins to snuggle under her!

I had a tiny blak roo (about the size of a pigeon) who had been attaking his former owners young daughter, at night he would snuggle up under my massive Brahma roo... in a tree out of reakh in all weathers!

I Know i didnt realise that adults done the sheltering under wing either. It wasnt a one off either as it happened again last night!! Miranda looks ever so proud and important as she shelters the other one!

My modern game bantams will cuddle up, with one under the others wing. For birds with such hard feathers its heart warming to see them share what little heat they have generated! They will happily brood togther and two will even bring up the same chick/s. They look so fierce but they are really lovely birds.
