  • Double yolk eggs 6/6

    Hello everyone
I bought 6 free range eggs and all of them had double yolks. Q1 Do the eggs come from the same chicken? Q2 Is it possible that the whole flock lays double yolk eggs and if so why? Q3 Is possible to get twin chicks from same egg? Please see photo.
    Regards

Hi Don, probably not the same chicken but rather the same breed, like in human twins who tend to be genetic. Some flocks are bred for this purpose and some breeds are pre disposed to it, like my warren who lays a double yolker about once a week. If i had a cock from the same breed who was also predisposed we could then breed a flock of double yolkers. Most double yolkers dont hatch so it would be difficult but can be done, siamese poultry are common; i.e. chick with 4 legs, two of them useless. Personally i think of this practice the same way I view breeding dogs who can't breathe because they "look good". If its occasional and natural then fair enough. Also, when you breed them to that level of double yolkers the eggs tend to be just large, which means they probably wouldnt hatch. Our double yolkers are much bigger than our biggest duck eggs, which means a better probability of hatching, we wouldnt breed her for that reason though, it smacks of GM to me.
    hope this helps
