Abandoned eggs

Oh well, my cream legbar hatch that was due off this Friday has been abandoned.

Went to see the broody this morning only to find her agitated and pacing to get out and the eggs stone cold. I think the stormy weather yesterday got to her. Will break the eggs open a bit later and disappoint myself further with what might have been. I shall be doubly cross if they are pullets.

The other broody though is still sitting tight and snug in a bug in her nest so fingers crossed for her. She's got a bit longer to go.

Sorry to hear that RH. My broody was a bit skittish yesterday, but seems to have settled back to the nest.
Nasty weather for spring.
It was a bit of a shock to the system after some nice days.
Good luck with the other clutch, and I look forward to seeing pics of the chicks.

My own eggs. We just had so much wind and rain Sunday and yesterday, I spent part of the day turning coops around away from the wind and some hens got blown over the fence, other bits of fence blew over, it was a horrible day. I'm not surprised it upset the broody tbh. I wouldn't have wanted to sit in that lot either. I just hoped that being so close she would not give up but I haven't candled these eggs ( my candler is not working very well and the shells are thick on these CLBs) so it might just be that they have died or are infertile in which case she has no reason to endure the awful conditions any more. Will go and crack them in a bit and report back.

Well result of opening was two dead pullet chicks and two undeveloped eggs. Could be worse, could be four dead pullets. Still have another seven "cooking", ready in a couple of weeks.

The broody was thrilled to be put back with the main flock and went around happily with chief cock for a while so I think her hormones played a part too. Can't blame it all on the weather.

How disappointing, though early days yet - so plenty more hatches to come!

sometimes they just don't settle to be broody- i am going to start making a note though of those hens that go off the brood mid way- there is a white pekin we have that always does that.......
