Miracle cure?...

A while back I mentioned that I had problems with Lice and my friend who owns a dog grooming company suggested I try a water down dog shampoo - we used 1 10th of what she would use on a dog and diluted it

I sprayed a very small amount it on one of the chickens direct to some live lice and they dropped dead immediately

Anyway I found out the name of the basis to the shampoo, Neem.

Having searched it seems people have used this on other forums

I'd be interested in any comments on this, as I cannot see anything that could cause any problems to the chickens....

I'm not condoning the use of this for chickens, and as per previous posts if you use any products its at your own risk, but I wanted to get some feedback

I 'thought' neem was a natural product, an oil which is produced in India or somewhere? I think it's recommended for headlice, but wouldn't know if it's suitable for chickens.

I've used neem oil soap on the dogs before, as I remember, it was very good for hotspots etc

Here are the ingredients, does anyone see anything that could cause a problem:
Water, Neem, Pine, Orange, Sesame and mild coconut cleanser (Opti Neem Shampoo)

I've done a quick Google of Neem - lots of info out there. I suggest researching its properties thoroughly and carefully before making up your mind. And bear in mind that just because something is natural doesn't mean it is 100% safe, although like you I definitely prefer natural products to chemical.

I look at everything that is put on poultry with the view that it is entering the food chain, albeit in sometimes minute quantities, and therefore will ultimately end up in my body (via egg or meat). Is the product safe enough for this to happen with no long term effect? I shall do a bit of research.

Done a bit of reading up on Neem oil. What I have gleaned so far is that it appears to be ok diluted in a spray form - dosage 2 tbsp to a gallon of water. Spray hen and housing weekly to repel mites and lice. Works by disrupting reproductive cycle. Avoid using if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
