    The advantage to gravel is that the wet can get away (which is a very good idea). If you can achieve that some other way, that is good too.
    Chipped wood (what the tree surgeon wants rid of) is another good approach, it won't get muddy too quickly unless the site is where all the local rain collects (DO NOT site the chook run in that dip in the ground! If you are on a slope have a little run-off ditch UPhill of the run, so that what lands above gets away). Wood chips will eventually start to rot down, then you use it on the garden and get a fresh lot (this is what others have been saying, but put into words of one syllable).
    Relying on sunshine to get things dry... You are in the UK aren't you??????
    Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
