  • Thirsty Silkie

i have a silkie who drinks a lot, if the hose is dripping or i water the pots she just keeps drinking, the rest of the chooks do aswel but not like the silkie.

in the morning her dropping are just watery, it soaks the bottom of the coop wheres shes been sitting, she is quite light aswell and often sleeps for the first hour when she is first let out but gets more active as the day goes on, she has a full crop by bedtime.

i have wormed her with Flubenvet within the last two weeks and give her a weeks dose of Tylan.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Is there a lot of white in her poo? Could be a kidney infection. You may need to get her seen by a vet and prescribed a different antibiotic (they will probably give Baytril) as Tylan is mostly used for respiratory problems.

Can chooks get diabetes? The symptoms are the same, constant thirst and weight change.

My Wife suggested this, I'm not sure if they can get diabetes or not.

Just Googled, apparently they can. Diarrhoea is a symptom. I do think you need to get her seen by a vet to get a proper diagnosis though.

Did the other silkies that you have lost exhibit similar symptoms?

I have tried all the local vets and none of them have a clue, maybe they can do a blood test to confirm this?

Sounds like they are fobbing you off. If the local vet doesn't have the information it is easy enough for them to contact colleagues who do have it. Just Googled and found a poultry friendly vet in Essex - Robin at The Millennium Way Practice in Braintree. You could give them a call and see what they say.
