I have seven cockerels at the allotments. I have hatched all but one myself over 5 years. Four are together and from the same hatch (1.5yrs old) two are about 4 to five year old pure breds with their own flocks I hatched myself and one is a refugee I saved.

We aren't allowed cockwerels at the allotments but for the last four years their have been no complaints so the law was not upheld.

There is a new person just moved in close to the allotments and they have complained.

Not looking forward to the onerous task of culling initially the four youngest.

If they still complain the oldies will have to go as well. Such a shame and a heartbreaking job, but rules is rules I suppose.

If I have to get rid of the cockerels I will just let the hens see out their lives and then be done with chooks completely.

Rules is rules...but I'd be gutted too(and just a little P'd off). All because one person complains, after everyone else in the neighbourhood has lived with them all this time.

Sorry to hear it. Can you not get someone else to do the deed? No shame in becoming attatched to them.

Get someone else to do it, I would try to find out who has complained and ask if they would object to just one cockerel being kept, provided it is not let out until 8 am. I do not understand people complaining about cockerels unless they are say in a really built up area.

I don't know anything about chooks other than eating them but could you not rehome them Snadge? You could visit...

Thought it was all to do with how close to built up areas you are.........we have cockerels on our allotments but there are no houses close by . Council yard, tip . old peoples home and industrial estate.....oh and the railway and the trains make more noise than the cockerels . Look up how far you need to be from houses in case there's a rule ......

I'd be gutted too. Was it the council that informed you of the complaint? Why now after all this time? It seems so unfair that you have put all that effort in just for some faceless nobody to spoil it all.

I know I'm a bit strange but if I was woken by cockerels in the morning I'd be hanging my head out the window to hear them better.

As Mr. BE says, can they not be re-homed?

What gets to me, we're not allowed them on our site, yet there's at least two you hear on the estate close by...apparently one is a council house. We're a council run allotment site, fairly tucked away, but our cockerels apparently must make more noise.

I live miles away from my allotment so haven't got to put up with the noise. I really CAN understand the annoyance but can't understand why after having them for five years its suddenly became an issue.

I was hoping to let Sid and his brother see out there days but its not to be. Those two and the cockerel I rehoused because it was going to get the chop are the ones I will struggle to kill.

The other four won't be easy but I wouldn't let anyone else do it for me..........I owe them that.

I'm of work from Tuesday anyway so will probably do the initial deed them. I feel rubbish about it and can't help thinking I've let them down poor buggars.

Do they compete when crowing? If you dropped down to the 2, are they as competitive being brothers?
