  • My Girls Arrived

After worrying a while back that getting chooks was the right thing to do, my girls arrived on Saturday

I have 8 chooks from the new enriched cage system, all 'girls with no knickers' lol and seem to be settling in nicely.

    Gosh they're so mesmerising!

Most are still a little cautious of me, but are getting used to me. One I've been picking up occasionally (nicknamed Gracie) , yesterday she fell asleep on me 3-4 mins after picking her up (I'm handling them a bit so they get used to it) and another I've nicknamed Squeeky is always at my feet chattering away, and nestled under my neck when I was rescuing a broken egg from the run - for a minute I braced myself for being attacked / pecked on the face but didn't want to back down so prepped myself to be pecked and then to 'buck' back loudly to show my dominance (lol, what do I sound like??) but she slid under my check/chest and settled dow..... awwwww bless her

Not sure if yours have had their beaks seared (the tip of them), but two of mine have and their pecks don't hurt... but boy the one's who hasn't had it done, it's like a needle!! Welcome to your flock

Hmmm... maybe they have been clipped? I read a while back that it's quite common for enriched cage system birds to have this done// definately more of a thump that a sharp pain

I pop on and off Snadger, but I'll always be a grape at heart I came back on a little bit a go, then started a new job and went quieter generally while I got used to the change of scenery with work. But sorry, you can't get rid of me that easily

I fed my girls porridge today for the first time as it was quite blustery and chilly. Blimey, I should have video'd it! Stupidly (in hindsight) I put it in a large plastic tuppawear tub. A squabble caused it to tip in 2 seconds flat so with half the porridge on the floor, and half being stood on in the tub by a chook there was porridge flying EVERYWHERE. It ended up on the floor, in feet, on heads, on wings... I suspect I would have been covered too if I'd have stayed close enough hehehehe
