  • Breeders in South East

    Hi Grapes.

I know I havent been on for a while, but when in need who to turn to? of couse... The Vine!

    I have a dilema..........

One lonely Gold Laced Orpington Cockerel and 3 lonely Buff Laced Wyandotte Bantam Cockerels ........... I can either sell them off cheap. not favourable........... buy hens for them and then either sell and pairs or trios or keep and breed.

My problem is, I have spent days constantly searching and contacting people and I can not find any hens in the south east!

    Help?

I got hybrids from About Us - The Ark Breeders and Stockists of Poultry, Waterfowl and Bee Keeping Supplies in Kent, but by the looks of your post you will be looking for purebreeds. I didn't go to these, but someone sent me the link http://www.henhousepoultry.co.uk/. It looks as if they might be able to help. Are you a member of any poultry forums? You might find someone on there who could help.

      Thanks Barley Sugar

Funnily enough Hen House was my first point of call as he is only up the road and the person we bought our first ever chooks from!

I have tried all poultry forums... i think and email as many as I can find! it seems everyone is just that little too far away!

hi! pp forum has wyandotte breeders that sometimes sell hens. You ought to be able to find a free to good home for the orp cockerel. Don 't expect to sell any- you will be lucky to get them rehomed- there are loads of people out there with cockerels that can't find homes- I am inundated with people desperate to rehome them- but they refuse to allow me to fatten them for dinner!!!!! The only cockerels that seem to sell, and for an excellent price are proven show winner lines!

You have probably found this list in your own searches, but I noticed there are some on there who don't have websites that might have what you are looking for. (I've been looking myself for skyline hybrids, they didn't do them at The Ark)

the other problem is that the breeding season has started so breeders with hens will be wanting to keep them to breed with. You might find some ex battery birds to put with them for the time being though. I recently had a hard time finding 3 little bantam hens for my grandson's easter present so he can have easter eggs daily lol. It was only because I used to show and know dozens of people, that I was able to source what I was looking for. Please don't advertise them free to a good home as they might just end up being bait birds for fighting cockerels. They die, but not until they have experienced fear and pain for seveal hours. Anyone who decides to breed, really needs to make a decision as to what they will do with their surplus cockerels before they start. On a personal level, I kill and eat any large fowl cockerels, and the bantam cockerels get killed and fed to the ferrets, cats or dogs. That way I know they will have had a good life right to the end, which comes fast, fear and pain free. I'd rather eat a cockerel which I have reared myself, known that it had a nice life and got fed properly, than buy one from the supermarket where there are no guarantees, even with free range chicken.
