I love this thread. Good to see the different set ups, very impressive. I don't have chickens yet but would like to get some. My worry is, who will look after them while we are away on holidays and such like?

Freestanding broody "box". This is sited within open run but hen and offspring are moved to covered coop/run once hatched.



Two day old cream legbar chicks - the dark stripey ones are the females.

This mum hatched her babies out under the hedge, she hatched 13 out of 14.

Handy method of transportation.



Mixed group of Buff Orps, Welsummer, Maran and Light Sussex. In the background is one of our homemade peck feeders and an old galvanised water trough on its side which is used as a shelter.



Large hen house. Pop hole in end with ramp. Roof is hinged for easy access. Sleeps 10 - 12 LF.

A couple of broody coops - these were being used by a bunch of growers at the time, and they hated the snow!

Chris, haven't any pics of the inside but it has three horizontal perches parallel to the nextbox. Each perch will take four birds depending on breed/size. The nestbox is a communal one with a dividing wall between it and the perching area. This removes so I can use the house for growers in it if necessary (the house has seen a variety of inmates) and we had 14 large cocks living in it last autumn quite happily although as a day to day layer house the maximum I have had in it any any one time is 10 hens plus one cock.

Not really a chicken, but a bullfinch who knocked himself out on the window. My son spent ages marvelling at him, we put him in a bush to recover and eventually he flew off.

Mama and babies now 6 weeks old. I took mama away 2 nights ago as she has now started laying again.

Oh loving all the photos. I am getting so clucky! I want some chooks! Trouble is trying to keep them safe. We have large chook shed/yard down the paddock but had a brown snake down there so not using that as not safe. I would love to have some in a chook tractor but then I'm pretty sure I'd feel sorry for them locked up, but with two kelpie crosses - I'd be feeling sorry I'd let them out I'd say. Maybe when we get more of the food forest happening we might find a good 'chook area' and then someone to look after them if we ever get to go on holidays

I've just finished a hatch of eggs from my own ducks, now a week old and having their first bath (noticed you are waiting for ducklings on the other thread petal - hope you have some soon) ...
