  • Mites and other infestations

Because I grew up round the corner from a granddad who kept chickens, I always liked the idea one day of having my own hens (I'm now retired so its been a long time coming). But how often do they become infected with creepy crawlies i.e. mites and suchlike? Also what is the likelihood of chickens having ticks? If anyone can help I would be very grateful. I'm not particularly squeamish just Insect phobic after having Lyme Disease (badly) a while ago.

Lice and worms are the most common infestations but regular preventative dusting for lice and routine deworming will keep your chickens healthy (just like you would regularly deworm and deflea your cats and dogs). Red mite can be avoided with careful choice and treatment of the hen house. Ticks are uncommon in poultry.
