Hi all, I have a bluebelle chicken that has gotten two bald patches. One either side of her neck. I have checked the area and the feathers are broken and no signs of infestations. It seems to have developed virtually over night. I can get piccies if needed. Any ideas??

Someone somewhere here stated that a hen with bald spots is the favorite of the cockeral.
Course, if you don't have a cockeral, I am clueless.

I would guess they are either being picked off by another hen or she is breaking them off trying to get to greenery through the sides of the run.Comment

I was watching them last night and I think it may be bedtime squabbles as she is a placid lady and just takes it when she is pecked at. She is ALWAYS the last to find her spot at night and when I put them away last night one of the other girls came out to say hello and had a blue feather stuck to her foot. I tell you what, its not easy getting a picture of a chickens neck!! The wont stand still so you pick them up and she bunches her neck up!! I have read that once there is bare skin they will continue to peck, is that true?http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jamiesjourney

You could try spraying the bald bit with purple spray so it doesn't look pink and inviting. Or try anti peck spray which is supposed to be nasty tasting. Some hens do just do it as habit though. I have an old hen who has a naughty habit of nibbling her cockerel's comb, she makes a sore patch and just nibbles it each night (I caught her at it after wondering why it wasn't healing). The weird thing is he just tolerates it, the great big softie.Comment

There has been no more plucking which is good. The roof is now fully up and the run dry so that seems to be the problem. Just got to wait for the feathers to grow back now.http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jamiesjourney
