Tylan is for respiratory. baytril is for anything else. Heavily over prescribed in my opinion, when owners ought to be told bird needs putting down. money money money!!!
Did you also know that Baytril isn't licenced for chooks?
I'm told by a specialist poultry vet that Denaguard is licenced and is a better AB than Baytril. Seemingly many small animal practices have Baytril in house whereas they might have to order in Denaguard.
Each hen they have prescribed Baytril for hasn't made it anyway. Since I've learned about Denaguard, I shall be asking my vet for this.
As I understand it, the reason why most practices don't stock Denaguard is because it is expensive to buy and (like any drug) has a shelf life. The number of cats and dogs seen at veterinary practices far outweighs the number of chickens so as far as the practice is concerned it makes sense to stock the antibiotics that are used most frequently. I'm sure any reasonable vet would be happy to order it in for you but be prepared for it to be v expensive. It would certainly be nice to see licensed chook medication being more freely available - maybe if more people ask for it then it will be.
i was told by a poultry expert yesterday that pig antibiotics are best. if you do a city and guilds type course on pig and poultry medicine, you get the vet out once a year to see stock then apparently you can just ask for prescriptions that you want thereafter. I expect thats for big outfits mind.
All the farmers who call into my vets just buy meds over the counter. If I want summat for my hens I have to have the bird seen. Probably a good idea but obviously more expensive.
I get free consultations and only pay for the medicine as the vet says she is on a steep learning curve.!! Mind you, touch wood, we don't go very often - I am ruthless about disposing inferior stock due to my belief in aiming to support the rare breeds- it does them no favours to keep the weaklings.
