  • chicks eat polystyrene

Why oh why would mother hen be teaching the 6 chicks (now 4 wks) to eat polystyrene?
They love it. I have been collecting the tubs from the local restaurant and using them for storage, table bases, worm farms etc - not pretty but useful and free.
But the chicks are eating it and I guess it won't digest and might just sit in the crop forever??? Maybe that's why one is so much smaller than the others maybe it's crop is so full of polystyrene it can't get enough food in.
    Aaarrrrgggghhhhh!

They do the strangest things. I would also be concerned. Either confine the hen and chicks to a coop where they can't access the polystyrene or if they are free ranging then move the polystyrene out of reach.

Mine do that too. I recently had cavity wall insulation put in, with a bead insulation material (which is basically coloured polystyrene balls ) - anyway, some that blew out of the cavity were chased around by my chickens until I was able to shoo them off/collect it all.

I noticed previously, when I was breaking up some packaging, and some of it blew across the garden that my lot went mad for it. As soon as I found out what the insulation material was, I went trying to round up the chickens as (as above) I knew they'd be munching any that blew around.
