Two of my chickens started an alarm call this morning and I ran out to see what was happening. One was standing on the house shouting incessantly and the other on the lawn doing the same. Third hen was in the nest box. The foster hen and 2 hybrid chicks she has had from 2 days old and are now 9 weeks old were missing. They have been free ranging because they were no longer cooperating with the arrangements for them to be in a run during the day.
I found them on a dwarf tree and an hour later they are still on the dwarf tree but higher up under the leaf cover so you have to look carefully to see them. No sign of whatever disturbed them but I am really pleased that my hen is being so protective and teaching the chicks what to do when danger is about.
Whatever the threat was the other hens were not afraid for themselves because they were out in the open and could be seen and heard from far and wide.
