Just when you think it can't get any worse!
After the heatwave in the spring when the girls melted, what seems like six months of rain and not getting out as much as they need, unexplained illness, foxes, badgers and no eggs since about February, just to top it off two of them drop dead in the space of a week!
Cr*p!!!!
So we are down to just one, a nice big, heavy weight, healthy albeit lonely Ginger nut Ranger.
The dilemma we now have is what to do next and what to buy next?
I will (if it ever stops raining) scrub the "house" and run from top to bottom with some serious disinfectant (just in case) and take a long hard look at what I have in the garden with a view to make it bigger, better and stronger. The idea of using an old greenhouse frame chopped down and covered with mesh has my brain going at the moment.
But the real challenge? is what breed to buy next. A couple of pure breed Rhode Island Reds sprang to mind, I have no idea why, one of those "good idea at the time" moments. After a bit of looking around there aren't too many available in my area (High Wycombe) so a bit of research was called for. Keeping with the idea of RIR I quite like the look of some Miss Pepper Pots. A pretty bird, good for the eggs, hardy, good for a family, affordable and available. Most importantly my little one likes the pictures of them!
So there we have it, I've gone from a complete low to an enthusiastic high in the space of a week. Strange things chickens!!!!!
