  • Pimples on pointy end of egg shell

Hi. I'm sure I've read about this somewhere before, but can I find it again? Nope, of course not! So please can someone tell me why my maran has started laying eggs with little pimples on them? She's probably around 2-3 years old (but may be more, I don't really know), and is laying almost every day at the moment (unlike most of the others, *sigh *). Her diet is very mixed, and no different from the others. Any ideas please?

    Thx

I'm sure I've read somewhere its due to excess calcium. As the laying rate slows (winter, distress etc), if they are getting the same intake of calcium they have an excess and this is distributed to the shell leaving rough patches or pimples.

I'm not a chicken keeper (yet) so someone may correct me on the above.

Mine do it occasionally - haven't even blinked an eye at them, as sometimes the eggs are speckled, large, small, round dimpled, pimpled, the works

Yes, just excess calcium deposits, nothing to worry about. You may find she lays them for a while, then they stop appearing. I have hens that do this from time to time, I don't change their diet or anything, the pimples usually go away.

          OK, that's reassuring then, thanks

I have an 18 month old black Aracana who has been laying a nice blue egg every other day or so. Suddenly she is having problems with the shell: it is either very hard with pimples or practically not there and a wet mess in the nesting box. My other two birds are fine. What's going on?

Have you checked for mites? When were they last wormed? Anything as of late that has stressed her?
