  • Naughty chicken

When I went into the garden this morning one of my naughty chickens was proudly leading out her new family of 8 chicks! The little sneak had managed to hide her nest away as we had said no more chicks this year. Hmm.
I've popped them in the greenhouse as it's a bit cold at night now, do you think they can stay there? I haven't got a nursery coop set up at the moment and they can't be free as my dog is partial to a chick.
The children will be delighted! Hubby not so!

Yes, I had my chooks in my Dad's Greenhouse over winter one year - they did a fab job of clearing it of unwanted bugs and stuff. They were so warm in there, I had to leave the door open a little for a little better circulation. It has vents and auto roof vents, too, but got very smelly!

Congrats on your Babies - I'm sure they'll give you and the kids many wasted hours of amusement.

I have had two banties do this to me this year. The first lot (9 chicks) I sold with mum when they were a few days old. The second lot I kept. It was the hen's third nest and I had foiled the two previous attempts finding both nests after she had laid 10 or so eggs in and before she started incubating. The third hatch produced 14 chicks. I discovered the nest only days before they hatched and hadn't the heart to destroy them. They are pretty chicks, and mostly pullets too.

Enjoy your late hatch, I'm sure they will be just fine in your greenhouse.

I have just found 2 'missing' pekins on eggs in a bush but they have gone off brood now I have put them and eggs in a safe place so eggs will have to be binned....
