  • I'm sure they're sneezing...

I'm sure 2 or 3 of my birds have started sneezing... I'm going to monitor today to check. If I'm right, would I be best starting the whole lot of them on antibiotics (again!) straight away, or should I leave it for a while until one or more of them starts wheezing and rattling?

Please advise! One of them seemed to be continuously full of colds and coughs last year, which meant all of them got dosed repeatedly with anti-biotics, and I'd like to try to avoid it this year if at all possible...

Several of them are moulting at the moment, some quite badly and feeling very sorry for themselves, and there's lots of dust and feathers everywhere, so I don't know if this could be causing the sneezing?

Off to check there's still garlic in the metal drinker, and refill the plastic vinegar / water container!

If they are just sneezing and it hasn't progressed to rattly breathing etc then yes hold off the drugs for a bit longer. Moulting will affect them, it's very stressful for them and this is why a lot of birds get respiratory symptoms around this time as the stress triggers other things. You may find they pick up without help once the feathers start growing back again. Garlic in the water is a good tonic. Some people also swear by a product called Herban but I have not tried this so cannot comment.

I use garlic in porridge at this time of year - make with water - or add to water as per RH. I keep Citricidal in too, just in case.
