  • Chook Advice - Multivitamins

The chap we had the chooks off said to supplement their feed with a multivitamin because as soon as a feed bag is open, the vitamin content starts to deteriorate. This is news to me, but he mentioned Spectrum specifically.
    Thoughts, opinions please.

If you use a good quality feed then there is no need to add extra vits. Most brands of feed are good for three months so as long as you use it up within that time then there shouldn't be a problem. A hen will find a lot of what she needs by free ranging. If this isn't possible then hanging up a variety of fresh greenstuff in the run will supply extra vits anyway.

I hardly ever supplement my birds - they have pellet in peck feeders, free range over large areas and have a scratch feed of wheat an hour or two pre roost. I do chuck them the odd thing - windfall apples, bread crusts etc - now and again but these don't go far among 80+ birds!!

Cheers RH. I buy the Marriages Omlet feed which has suited well. I have no problem getting through it in three months now They do free range with me up in the garden. Today was the newbies' first day out and they reacted well. I tie up lettuce for them to peck and swing, an apple too, same with broccoli or chard from time to time. I give corn scratch in the afternoon for an energy warmer before bed. They have constant access to their feeders. So stay as is then? Thanks RH
