  • Silent hen

Hi all, I have four hens and when my daughter was asking me about them I described one of them of characterless . This hen is a beautiful blue egg layer, not laying at the moment so she really is pretty useless, but I have never warmed to her as I have all my other hens. They are pets really and am quite aware that a lot of you will think I'm dotty.
The point if this post is that I realised today what it is about her that's odd, she's silent. She doesn't make any of those lovely hen noises that are just so wonderful and calming and a joy to hear.
Does anyone else have a silent hen?

I wouldn't know, LG - I have 23 of the little wotsits - if any are silent, I'll probably never know!

Not sure, I don't have as many as G4 but one of my Tic Tacs is pretty quiet. It's fairly young so I think it will start talking soon. Funny how little things like their chatter makes you warm to them.

Don't know about hens but had a silent duck once. When I 'did the deed' discovered that it had no voice box!

Well my silent hen has started to be very vocal again as she's come back in to lay. Big announcements about that!! But still no lovely little hen noises just a big squawk when she 's layed and also for food in the morning, I hadn't missed that!

One of my hens used to make noises, but seemed to lose her voice a few months ago and it's never really come back - occasional tiny croaky whisper but nothing else. Possibly the result of a cold in the winter? Plus did tie in with going off-lay and moulting etc - some of them do seem to change their personalities don't they?

My lot seem to be very noisy in the morning while I'm trying to open their door to let them out, and in the evening if I'm checking they are all in there. But otherwise the girls are pretty quiet. Frank is a chatterbox tho. He calls out to them, he scolds them if they go off. He gets upset if he sees the cat.
The new girls are a bit noisier than the older ones.

yep, I swore the bejeezuz at him today - I was trying to get the chick heat lamp to the right height, in the barn and it was really fiddly and the little b*****d kept yelling right next to me- he had no business being there - the nosy git.

oh our pekin boys do this- they find nests - build them and hang around - did you know a pekin boy will sit on eggs if his mate dies? - they are interesting things.
