    and get some chickens!!

I'm thinking 3-4 - possibly 4 bantams or maybe 2 or 3 medium size chickens.

We're going to get an 8ft run with coop in the garden and I think I will get an automatic door opener and closer.

My kids are really excited although when we went to visit a friend with chickens this afternoon I think they were bigger than they expected and suddenly seemed a bit nervous. That's why I think bantams might be better to start with.

We have a neighbour happy to look after them when we're away. Her parents had chickens for years so she's quite happy to do it.

So... advice for a complete beginner?!

Go for it , u won't regret it and your children will soon get used to the hens and their ways. You'll get lots of support here but do buy a good reference book to read up.
      Good luck !

I love bantams but if your only going to get 3 or 4 I think I'd go for a breed that the kids can handle easily- like a Sussex. Calm and very friendly.
        * just re-read your post! Best buy 3, it's not wise to buy 2. Chickens are flock birds and need the company and if one dies your not left with just the one.

Three is a better number, I agree.

I started with bantams, some are friendly, but others flighty and nervous. Bigger chickens seem to be clamer and friendlier, in fact the bigger the better in friendliness terms.

Grab a chair and watch them. I spend many an hour sat in the garden laughing at all my silly chickens.

You can't go wrong with Warrens... they're pretty much silly tame. They are bred to lay, so you'll pretty much get an egg a day off each of them.

                There's a breed recommendation thread here: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ead_69849.html
