  • Blind Hen?

A three year old Welsommer who previously seemed normal and healthy has suddenly appeared to go blind. Although she seems to be healthy enough, she now doesn't move about. She does not react to visual stimulant. She has now been in this state for two weeks and still seems healthy? Is there anything I can do or would it be better to cull the bird?
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

Is she still eating and drinking? Does she seem to find her way to these things with any degree of confidence?

My birds are pets just as much as they are productive livestock, so I have a problem with culling a healthy bird, that said if you have got to the point of raising table birds (I haven't yet - I could do it, but the kids would go balistic) and you are confident that her productive years are over.......
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

      Hit the wrong button!

Was going to add, if you are not going to take her to the vet for what might be and expensive mission in futility, consider how you propose to 'deal' with the resultant carcass - sorry to be blunt!

The law goes not allow pet hens to be burried in the garden - local foxes might have something to say as well!

I think the law regarding the disposal of poultry carcasses is aimed at the big producers who may have a lot of diseased birds.I am not saying that the law excuses pet birds but I see nothing wrong in burying a pet hen in your garden as long as you are sure that(a)it died of old age or(b)that it is in no way a threat to any other livestock around. In other words bugger DEFRA,you bury your pet in a way you see fitting.
