  • Fox proofing?

I have seen a suggestion that a way to stop foxes from digging under the run is to put wire along the bottom of the pen coming out and putting a layer of earth over it. When the fox starts to dig he gives up when he comes up against the wire mesh.

What kind of wire mesh would this be and where on earth can I get some from?

    Thanks.

We just used normal galvanised chicken wire on the ground and under the border of the run, haven't noticed any signs of digging, but foxxy does bite the mesh walls, have reinforced the run with an outer layer of pig wire, Countrywide have a good selection of wire mesh.

Paving slabs around the outside also stops digging. Just found a blackbird minus it's head on our lawn. Not sure if it's a fox or cat but glad I have the electrtic fence as I know there's foxes in next doors garden.

Aha! Wickes seems to be a good source. Thanks for the paving slab idea, Frias - we have plenty of those.

Weld mesh is the mesh you need. Half inch mesh can be bought on a roll from CWG, B and Q, Wickes or Animal Kingdom at Lichfield.

useful info vvg. - all that digging to put it in place makes me feel tired thinking about it! its worth doing though as they try to dig down, jump over or bite through! we have electric fencing but its forever shorting out due to the trees. Our entire german shepherd scent marks the place which seems to be a deterrant to foxes?

Hi Petal - thanks. I think our terrier helps enormously too. He barks and sees off foxes, but then he is a foxy terrier

We've got lots of spare paving slabs so I'm going to put those all round the edges. Thanks.
