  • Leaving coop door open slightly?

I was wondering whether it was ok to leave the coop door partly open at night when it is quite hot over night - eg tomorrow is forecast to stay at 15/16 degc over night.

The coop is in a fox proof (as much as anyone can say fox proof) pen so they should be safe.

My ladies have recently gone to the great hen house in the sky but they did sleep outside during the hot balmy nights very rarely venturing inside and they were fine. Dont forget in the wild chickens roost in trees all year round!!

I'm not shutting mine in at night at the moment, they are closed in their run, but I don't shut them up over night.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Mine are shut up via an auto door closer - but if they want, they have the option to sleep out in their run. They always go on the coop. I put an auto door opener on as mine were getting up at 3/4am and squawking like mad to be let out of their run. Don't think my neighbors were too impressed

I'm up at 5 with the puppy at the moment Chris, so they don't have to wait too long to be let out!!

That's another reason I want to leave it open overnight. Our neighbour will be looking after them when we go on holiday in a few weeks and I don't want them to feel they've got to come and let them out at 6.30 every morning. If they leave them shut in the pen they can let themselves out of the coop when they're ready.

I do the same as Gadget but on mornings like today when all 5 hens wanted to lay early it can get a bit noisy! (Only have 2 nest boxes.)
