  • Changing brand of layers pellets. Are chickens fussy?!

When we bought our chickens we bought layers pellets from the small holding. I've looked in suppliers near us and nowhere has the same brand. If I drive back to where we got them it's a 50 min drive back and forth and however much in petrol so I'm thinking of just getting the brand from either of our local pet stores. Are chickens fussy about changing brand? Should I mix the two brands together to begin with? Or am I over thinking this?

On the plus side, it looks as if one 20kg bag is going to last us at least 2 months and as for the 20kg bag of corn, I think that will last us years at this rate!

Most seem to rate Marriages feed which you might be able to buy at Ashby Horse/Feed shop. I will look next time I'm there. I use Omlet Organic feed which is Marriages. Mole Country Stores at Tutbury is another farming/feed store. Try calling them.
If you are interested in trying them with Marriages I can let you have a bit for trialling.

Even if they are fussy and won't eat it at first - don't give them anything else to eat, they'll eat it eventually !

Thanks, but I don't particularly want to have to go far to get them. I just want to be able to get them from nearby and not have to make special trips. I'll be changing to Dodson and Horrell from Heygates.

I use heygates the paper bag rather than the green bag, my chooks started on this so I've never changed from it. Not sure how much your local pet store charges, our farm suppliers are £6.20 a 20kg bag. Farm suppliers are generally cheaper than pet stores.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I use Heygates, nice small pellets & £7.50 a bag here. D&H are expensive, same with the horse feed.

Ooh - been on Heygates website and there are two suppliers very close to me. Will phone them to find out prices etc.
