  • HELP! What to put the extended run on

We've bought a lovely walk in run for our chooks. However it's made of wood. The wood has been pressure treated and had a good coating of creocote. My dad has suggested putting the run on bedded bricks to prevent the wood being in the ground and rotting.
However we don't have the funds to buy the bricks!
Any suggestions? We don't want to ruin our lovely new run, it needs to last a good few years yet.

If the wood has been treated it should be fine until the funds are available to buy bricks. The chooks will dig round the edges anyway and you will need to do some maintance from time to time.

I agree - if it's treated it should be fine for a few years - think of a fence! You don't stand a fence on bricks, do you? Although I'm a bit confused by your use of the word 'in' the ground - is that a typo, or do you have it buried in some way?

The run will sit on the ground but will inevitably get covered with earth when the chooks are doing all their digging.
Hmmm... I might suggest we get the run up and aim to put it on bedded bricks before winter sets in. Should keep OH busy!

hi, I was in the same situation, I found that engineering bricks were the cheapest, paying just 42p each, they came from wickes, so I am sure you could find even cheaper. 50 of bricks did my 12x6 run nicely,

Try looking on the 'freebies' section of your local Gumtree, people are regularly trying to get rid of bricks, paving slabs etc on there.

Thanks so much you lot!!! I've been keeping a beedy eye on gumtree and freecycle. I'll check out Wickes too. We've have all the concrete so 42p per brick won't break the bank.

Concrete bricks are 38p at B&Q but there is usually loads of bricks/slabs/blocks on freecycle as people have suggested.
