I looking to get some chickens soon but was looking to get a few of different breeds ie polish rooster, silkie, rhode island red. As such ill probably have to get them from different dealers in northern ireland. Just wondering if the chickens are all of a similar age can they be integrated or would i have to hatch from eggs and have them grow up together

Introducing young chickens into an established flock can often be a headache, if you are starting off with all young ones of a similar age this shouldn't be to much trouble. I feed growers pellets up until POL so make sure they are similar ages as often a 12 week old bird has very different needs to a 20 week old one and size will then vary enormously. Though you should 'do your homework' as the pretty fancy breeds can be much harder to keep than some of your bog standard hybrids or hardy pure breeds such as the sussex which I have. -

I have a few bantams running with my Sussex hens but I would be careful of having a LF cock running with a small bird, especially in a small flock.Comment

How true Scarlet. Every year I get 2 new POL and after a week in quaratine I start to introduce the new girls to the older ones. Usually there is a bit of bullying and feather pulling but nothing too serious. Not so this year. Last years newbys are out to kill this years!

Oh, i really feel sorry for you but everyone that has kept chickens has gone through something similar- not that its much help!!
I let mine run side by side now with plastic mesh type fencing for a barrier for several weeks before they get mixed together. It's much easierLast edited by Scarlet; 02-09-2013, 10:50 PM.Comment
