Chicken first aid kit

Hi everyone,

We're getting chickens soon - yay! I wondered what you have in your chicken first aid kit? The lists in the books I've read seem endless and expensive. What should I definitely get before the chickens arrive?

Diatom - you WILL get mites. Basic wound powder, just in case - I've never bothered. Torch. Comfy stool - you'll spend ages just watching them.

Actually - I don't have a Chook-specific first-ad kit!

I don't have a hen first aid kit. To be honest it didn't even occur to me to get one, I hope that doesn't make me a bad hen owner! I do really love my hens!

Just wanted to add, I do have the comfy stool!

Mine has evolved over the year and has;
Sudocreme
Vaseline
Purple Spray
Mite spray
Diatom [lots of this]
Surgical spirit
Plasters
Cotton wool
Cod liver oil

The little buggers I have had over the years can be quite nasty to each other, purple spray is great to spray on feather pins when they bleed to stop others noticing the blood and help it heal. I have more than once done first aid on a hen which has had half her comb lifted off her head by one of the other girls; plasters and sudocreme, looked funny but it worked!!!

Cleaning legs with cotton wool soaked in surgical spirit and then covering with a layer of Vaseline is great for getting rid of scaly leg mite.

Cod liver oil, makes me heave but is a great pick me up for a poorly chook who isn't eating, they seem to love it. I put some in their water if the colds and sniffles are going round.

My vet by the way was useless when I took one with a torn comb. His attitude was that its a chicken, chickens are cheap if not free. can't print what I said.

Along with some of the others listed I'm never without Flubenvet or apple cider vinegar.

I finally figured out how to reset my password so I'm back to say thank you to you all for the great advice! I now have a box of essential store cupboard ingredients and......collected six chicks on Thursday!
