There is no law barring you from keeping hens if you're a homeowner. If you rent you probably aren't allowed.
You'll note I say hens. Cockerels are generally not allowed but as WendyC said, it might be wise to check. Better to be sure you can before you can instead of getting them and finding out you can't.

Hello, I checked the deeds to our house and also emailed our local council to officially ask. I took a 'can I keep them/anything you advise' approach. I figured if I ever had to deal with the council due to a complaint at least I could prove I'd thought about it and seemed advice in advance. I've saved the email should I ever need it.
