  • Hen eating frogs!!

I am dismayed, my hens have demolished my frog population...definitely pouncing on them and eating them I'd no idea hens would be capable of such a thing!

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it the way of things or are my hens slightly crazed?

I hid the frog I got out of the water barrel, the girls would have loved it.
I'm wondering if the girls were the reason the snake I found in the food forest was dead. They're quite lethal when they want to be.
Wish they'd peck at the little dog instead of running from him.

Bizarrely my girls don't eat much out of the ordinary, I've offered them worms and slugs in the past and got a turned up nose. As for pecking the dog mine terrify the spanial, when they are in the garden the dog watches from a distance.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

There is a big difference. Frogs are in trouble worldwide, decreasing numbers everywhere. Frogs are a pleasure to have in the garden and will eat small slugs and pests. I don't think slugs can be compared to frogs at all. Plus I just love frogs!

My hens are in their run this morning and will have to stay there till I've worked out some way to protect the frogs, at least so they can leave the pond safely.

Goodness mine go completely berserk at the very sight of a worm and as for bacon rind...just manic!

              Not to a hen, I don't think.

All sadly true as far as the hens are concerned but oh dear, from my point of view it's awful! My pond was full of frogs and now it's silent. And the hens are stuck in their run dreaming about eating frogs!!

One of my friends hens went for her dog with its feet .....they can be vicious. Maybe need to fence the pond off.?

I've been thinking about that...but the frogs will have to leave some time and hop the gamut

Just wanted to add that my hens also rush at my very harmless dog, with wings out in attack mode!!

I expect they taste much the same, to a hen, both being made of slugs However, I've observed our frog pond, and found that they prefer earthworms to slugs
