  • Sour crop

    Hello folks

One of my girls looks as though she has sour crop - a poultry friend of mine has had a look at her and emptied some of her crop contents and has suggested I treat her with garlic & cod liver oil mixed with a little oatmeal. Needless to say she is not remotely interested in it and I am wondering if there is anything I can try her with.

She obviously isn't herself - isn't eating properly but is interested in "live" food such as wood lice and is drinking.

I have read about giving live yoghurt to repopulate the bacteria in her crop - if anyone has any experience of sour crop, would really appreciate your input - she's a lovely blackrock hen and want to help her.

    Kind regards

Yes, you can try her with live yoghurt. Also Katie Theas book suggest you can mix a teaspoon of Epsom salts in a glass of water and syringe 5ml into her which is another option if you feel up to it?

Other than that ( not sure if she is a well loved pet or an older bird ??) you could take her to the vet. There is an anti fungal drug that can be given to treat a candida infection although I believe it is expensive and once they start with this problem it often comes back.

    Probably not much help really!

I give my girls natural yoghurt if I've bought any for cooking with at any point and they absolutely love it! Don't think you'll have any problem with getting her to eat any

Hi there - well she is not get any worse (thank goodness) and has started to take more of an interest in eating. Gave her a bit of mashed potato (which she loves) mixed with a spoonful of natural yoghurt and yes, straight down it went so fingers crossed she might be on the mend.

This all started more than a week ago with diarrhoea (yellow in colour) but she was fine in herself and eating well and then she went off the food and starting doing the slow-motion walk that they do when they are not well. I thought the diarrhoea might be worms so wormed her but after a few days she went off her food.

Anyhow thank you for your input - this forum is brilliant for when you're worried about your poultry because everyone knows what it's like not knowing what to do for the best.

        Kind regards
