  • Just bought three...

They're beating seven bells out of each other just now, so I'll leave them to it for a bit and then get a couple of photos. We're getting three more tomorrow.

Today's three are a Bluebell and two Calder Rangers/Colombian Black Tails. I really wanted a Bluebell but now we have her she's by far the biggest and is definitely the dominant hen so far. We're picking up three more tomorrow from a different place (it isn't open today, annoyingly) so we'll have to go through the handbags all over again. It's horrible to see but I know it's natural and they have to get it over and done with.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

Er, no! The Calders are brilliant - very funny. Bluebell is a thug so far, so the Calders (Brownie and Bessie) are working together to distract her so the other can dart in for food and water They do a brilliant noncholant stroll off when she spots them at the feeder. I've read that Bluebells are docile and often at the foot of the pecking order - if that's true then Bluebell's in for a nasty shock tomorrow when we get the next three!

Bluebell's obsessed with food - she's eaten *all* the time since we brought them home. The Calders are at the door (it's a big grid so they can see through easily) looking out and generally being inquisitive. Bluebell's more brawn than brain it seems but the Calders are a pair of smartypants! Bessie & Brownie keep pecking each others' beaks in a very gentle manner - anyone know why they do that?
