Hi all, just watched a programme with alys fowler and she said she uses grass clippings in her run because it then brilliant for the compost heap. Just wondering f anyone has tried this because I'm worried it'll go slimey.

I would not give my hens grass clippings, I'm sure it would go slimy. I can't see that grass clippings would be good for them at all as it goes off so quickly.

Grass clippings give the chickens something to scratch around in. They do eat it and in all honesty, I've never seen any of the stuff I've given them go slimy. They spread it around quite a bit so it dries out nicely.

I used to spread the grass clippings out to dry on a tarpaulin. Then use them in the nest boxes, then put them in the run for them to rootle around in. Finally it would all be put in the compost bin.

Spreading the grass out thinly should allow it to dry out and not get slimy. The hens scratching about will help turn it and allow air to dry it out more.

I would pick it up and add it to then compost bin, rather than adding more on top of it. I would only leave a thin layer of grass in the run
