hens for meat

i have been thinking of getting some chooks to raise for the pot, any advice on breeds, i would rather get a traditional breed and raise about half a dozen first to see how it goes

any of the heavy breeds would be OK Crackapple, depends if you want them to look nice or just put on meat I guess. Most folk usually use the excess cockerels, but have 6 of them maight now make you popular with your neighbours!!

Sussex are OK and so are Rhode Islands, if you get a cockeral of one & hens of the other you can breed your own sex linked poultry.

The modern Broilers will cope with a more pleasant life style, but you might struggle with quantities if you only want 6 rather than 600

Its it dorking? I remember that they did a taste test on River Cottage and dorking with indian game cock came out the best as they are an old variety, plenty of taste.
