  • Egg Laying Problem?

Enid, my light sussex was looking very gloomy this morning, she did race about for the morning treat of brown rice sprinkled round the run but after that it was under the chair in the run. At lunch time I saw she had laid an egg under the chair, when I picked it up it had blood streaks on it, it was a normal size, Anyone know why? I looked at her vent and all seemed fine. She was much perkier and back to normal as if a great weight had gone from her mind....
She has laid two soft shelled eggs previously, also in the same place and not in the nest box. It can't be lack of grit, that's always on offer.

Just getting into egg laying routine I would guess. The first few with-shell eggs that my lot laid also caused a bit of fuss.

I suspect it is a little like us giving birth only on a more regular basis! One big ouch and it's over. I certaintly wasn't calm the first time around!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

      Hi
Hadn't thought of it being painful, poor Enid and nearly everyday too, no wonder she was looking miserable and just her luck to live with Dorothy and Barbara who are like those fearsome women who proclaim loudly they could drop a baby in a field and be back to work in 5 minutes.

When one of mine first came into lay we had a couple of soft shelled eggs and one or two with no shells at all. was told by the chap who runs our local feed store not to worry too much (because I was!) as it would settle down as she went on and to let her get on with it. They all lay in the boxes now. Is she new to laying?

She's been laying since mid May, and the soft shell eggs were quite recent, so a month after that?
