Hi Paul - I'm still not entirely convinced about Kiev.... I never saw this egg, Richard found it on opening and described it as an egg without shell, just the inner membrane. Since the other two both laid proper eggs that day we assume it was Kievs.......

      Terry,

I think (IMHO!) that the first couple of eggs laid can be a bit dodgy, I know some of ours were. For the sake of an old timer, remind me why you think Kiev may not be a hen? Is it just the lack of eggs??

No..... or not really..... she is an Araucana, bought at a supposed 4 1/5 months old (18-19 weeks) that was, I think, 7 weeks ago - so she is now 25-26 weeks old - rather old to only just be starting to lay. 'She' greets the morning at around 7 am every day and the other hens hate her! It has been suggested that hre grey legs imply non-she status, not sure on that one, it is in the breed description....

It must be a bit of a nightmare, because as you may have picked up we have two chicks, which we were reassured are hens, but ...well you never know do you?? especially as they were 'pick of bunch' and then had coccidiossis the next day - so pick of bunch they werent!!! We have now had them since end of May and are very attached, and just awaiting now and fingers crossed they are hens. We live in the city, so cockerels are not an option. I am not sure at what stage you really know - other than the early morning alarm call!!! A friend of mine suggested a cockerel to stop the bullying as he would keep them all in order, but isnt it Kiev who is being bullied? He also said that if you can keep their heads down in the night, then they cant crow (or something similar that I couldnt quite work out!!!). Am just enjoying a bit of peace, quiet and good health (touch wood) today, no doubt that could all change in the time it takes for me to open the corn tin!!!

I hope Hettie is a she, will you be OK to keep her if she isnt?

Hettie and Kiev are the same hen...... Our name is Kiev but she/he/it is a 'virtual pet' for Headfry, and called Hettie by her...

            Confusing isn't it!

If Kiev turns out to be a boy then we will let him breed with Kentucky (also know as Rosemary by Garlicbutter) 'cause Kentucky is a leghorn and lays white eggs - which should mean that the eggs laid by any offspring would be blue......
