  • chicken coughing

    Hi
Haven't been on for a while as everything been going okay. I have recently noticed that one of my newish hens is coughing and unsure how to treat as lots of info out there but unsure what best method.
She is eating, laying and perfectly happy. No runny nose/eyes. Run is very dry and wondered if it was the dust that was affecting her.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Did you put her in with your old birds? It's probably wise to isolate her but she could just be a little run down with the stress of the move. I don't think a dusty run would cause a cough.
If it was me, I'd just keep an eye on her for the time being. Feed her up a bit, make sure she hasn't got anything else, mites, lice etc.

When were they all wormed including the newish one?---i am thinking of gape worm.
Feed the soil, not the plants.

A gape worm cough is quite distinctive somehow - a sort of high pitched yap almost. Quite loud. Almost like a cross between a cough and a sneeze. Look out for the beak opening like a yawn too.

One or two of my birds get a 'normal' cough occasionally - I suspect it's a myco-related thing brought into the flock in the past, and persisting through carriers. If your bird has picked it up somewhere, you may need to treat all of them with an antibiotic from the vet if it doesn't clear up by itself. A couple of mine are coughing a wee bit from time to time at the moment, but nothing I'm worried about - yet. If others start too then it's another vet call ...

I took her to the vet and she was given an antibiotic which has cleared it up. Thanks for all your comments, very helpful.

In future be very careful what you introduce to the flock. My hens all come from vaccinated high health status growers. There are a lot of people out there hatching from untreated hens and once they come to you under stress Myso comes out. I would be very vigilant in future that this hen could bring in myso to the flock.
