Kentucky was put to sleep yesterday, she had lost a pound in weight over the last week, and despite all we tried - and the vets tried everything - she showed no signs of improvement.

She was paralised in her left leg, left wing and gave no reaction to movement near her left eye. She could never have lived a normal life, nor been placed with other birds.

I know it was the right thing to do - but I still feel like s**t!

So much for 'don't get involved - it's only livestock'!

              So sorry Terry,
My girls were got to be 'livestock' and I cried like a baby when anything bad has happened to them.

Sorry to hear about Kentucky TP but at least she is not suffering.

                  Take care.

So sorry TP, that's such a shame, after all your hard work to try and pull her through. Hope you're feeling better this morning. Hens do sometimes have a nasty habit of inventing ways to die. They give back so much though, and not just eggs! Will you think about getting Kentucky II?

sorry TP, its allways hard when animals die, you did the right thing tho, its no life at all for a chook that cant scratch and hen peck.

So sorry Terry, but you did the right thing in not allowing her to suffer. And I think it's right that you should feel the way you do, it shows you care.

                          Terry
Just caught up with your thread, what a bum deal you've had, and poor little bird, was it a stroke?
I always get overcome when I've had to have animals put to sleep, it's something to dread and not made easier by having to go back in the waiting room to pay, sobbing the while then having to walk the gamut of the waiting patients and their owners and with an empty basket to carry home.
The only words of consolation I can come up with that that lucky bird had caring owners, ie you. Not many hens would have been so fortunate, and while she was with you she had a good life.
And one thing I do to remember them by is to plant a special flower, my beautiful Siamese died of old age last autumn and I now have a rose planted in her honour.
                          hope you feel better soon
                          Sue

Thank you everyone! You are a wonderful bunch of people!

To answer a few questions in no particular order....

Yes there will be a Kentucky II, but not until after the holidays, I don't want the hassle of a non intergrated hen when we are away and can't intervene!

Our vets has a really nice policy of you just fleeing after loosing a pet, they then send the bill through the post for you to deal with when you feel somewhat more collected! (... and are sitting down!......)

Yes, we are all feeling better now, thank you - I still think it is silly to cry over a hen, but there you are. I just hate loosing....

I had a look at the egg book - we had less than a dozen eggs from her, we always had doubts about the way both Kentucky and Kiev were raised, but with no knowledge and less proof...... I will vote with my feet and never buy from that supplier again.

I will think about a special plant for a memorial, better be something the others don't want to eat or we won't keep it long!

                            Thanks again

                            Terry

                              Hi Terry
Only just caught up with this thread, sorry to hear your news - its really hard when you lose them, but as they say better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all..! And thats true of pets/chooks too!

Glad to read you are coping.

May I suggest a topiary chicken (at risk of being hounded of the vine) - don't think chooks, dogs, cats, kids etc damage topiary too seriously!
