  • Cuttlefish?

    Advice please!

I've picked up a few cuttlefish from the beach and wondered if anyone has ever fed them to their chooks?
i've had a bit a gooooogle and realise the absorbed salt could be an issue( didn't realise it can kill a chook!)...so, it's recommended they are soaked and the water is regularly changed.
But...for how often and for how long?

they have all the calcium they need from feed and oyster shells , but I thought this might be something different for them to play with.

too much risk/faff for little gain?

    advice please!
    ta!

I use shop bought ones for my cockatiels. Apart from salt there's the possibility of other contamination.

    Found a couple of links.

Thanks Danny - so it's still a 'maybe/maybe not situation then' ?...even if scrubbed and soaked.

I'm a an 'err on the side of caution' sort of person, so am still not convinced to give it a try without someone saying something like 'oh-we do it as a treat once a month' sort of thing

I like the idea of putting them in the oven to kill off bacteria as we do with our eggshells though.....

        Hi Nicos
        I wouldn't, too many unknowns.
Salt - chickens = dead, even though mine do have some bread very occasionally.
Feed the soil, not the plants.

          Why risk it?

I did see a post where they said this stank the house out! Possibly permeated with rotten squid. Too much hassle.
