  • Tree or Shrub

    Hi,

I'm looking to grow a tree or shrub in a corner of my chicken run, I did attempt a willow as part of the run gets a little boggy through winter but it hasn't sprung into action this spring so I think it didn't favour the rich soil. Any suggestions?? thanks in advance

How tall? Is it an open run or covered?
Is it for shade or for them to perch in?

    So many questions!

Mine like to run amongst the raspberry canes, eating the fruit as they go!

It's covered but only with thin mesh so can easily be cut away if the tree grows up to it. It's more for shade and asthetics

Have you thought of a fruit tree, if the area gets a good amount of sun and some water?
Cluckies around the base would eliminate most of the more troublesome pests.
Feed the soil, not the plants.
        (helps if you have cluckies)

That would be ideal, would an apple or current bush be ok with the very rich soil?

Anything with in pecking distance doesn't stand a chance. The hens will peck off all the new growth. There fore you would need to plant a tree with a trunk. Can you plant outside the run?

I've pretty much planted what I can around the run a few climbers working there way over up and over just wanted a focal point. If a fruit tree will tolerate the soil then I can wire mesh it off until it's established
