Lavender ?

Is there a lavender that you can cut back and cut into the wood that will then regrow from the "old" wood.

Had a lavender years back but I ended up with lots of unsightly old wood and not much else. Had an idea that there is one around now.

I've not heard of one that can be cut back hard. This site seems to think you can with common English varieties. The writer seems to be a professional gardener but I'm not sure if you cut into the wood on a Munstead say that it would sprout anew from the bottom.

However lavender cutting are easy to take and when I have taken any usually about 50% take. This year, I've got 2 overgrown (with weeds) lavender that I want to get rid of and replace with younger plants. I took a few cuttings from each about 6 weeks ago and just one of each has taken this year but that is enough. I also took 4 cuttings from rosemary which is related and all 4 of those have take.

Some varieties are naturally smaller than others - so no, you can't prune lavender back to old wood, but yes, you can have small bushes which you trim yearly and which stay small.

I think you need to cut your losses and get some new plants for next year. It sounds like your plant hasn't been looking its best for some time as it wasn't maintained yearly after it's finished flowering. Usually you need to take cuttings of some side shoots after flowering in July, so I think it's a bit late now for them.
