I have a lot of daffodil bulbs in the garden, I generally leave them in the soil, and they flower the following year, if you are not getting any flowers the usual cause is lack of feeding this can be from cutting or restricting the leaves (tieing them up after flowering) the leaves feed the bulb, and should be left for at least least six weeks after flowering, and of course remove the seed heads, or it could be over crowding and if so lift and replant giving the bulb some space, if like VC said you plant them in pots a good way to do that is by planting in the perforated type of pots used for fish ponds or cheaper alternative is using a veg. Caddy?( the thing that you put veg scraps in) planting them in that means you can bury it and don't need to water it then lift it out after flowering
