Roses sprouting, should I prune ?

My rose bushes all have new red shoots sprouting from the branches.
They need pruning as they are too big.
Should I prune them now before they waste energy on the new shoots.
Or should I dig out the bushes and plant some nice spuds.

The answer to that needs you to decide whether you prefer roses or spuds

If the answer does happen to be roses, then yes - prune them now.

If you choose spuds - you know what to do LOL
